A tough choice, but when it comes to reliable, accessible and just plain impressive tequila, you can’t go wrong with these.
La Gritona Reposado
We absolutely love La Gritona, it would be our top selection for 2024.
What really makes this tequila special, is the distiller Melly Barajas who creates magic with a staff of women at her small distillery in Jalisco.
It’s crisp, fresh and well rounded. The agave shines through without any aged oak interfering with it.
Not only is the tequila great, but sustainability is top of mind. When we bring out a bottle to share with friends, we’re proudly talking about the bottles being hand blown with recycled Mexican glass – as if we ourselves were traditional Mexican glass blowers.
La Gritona Reposado is additive-free and all agave remnants left over from production are given to local farmers for cattle feed.
Herradura Anejo
Herradura Anejo is a well-priced, go-to. A quality tequila you will find in most places.
It’s on our list, not only for the delicious peppery, caramel and agave taste but also because the horseshoe on the label represents good fortune and extraordinary flavour. We like these things.
It’s a very versatile option that’s always good to have on hand. You will feel on edge if you don’t have a horseshoe hanging around in your cabinet.
G4 Reposado
Ah, the underdog. We didn’t think much of this tequila when we first saw the name and the label. What’s with that font?
Once tasted however, you understand where the effort was placed. We appreciate the spice in it, we have a Southern Hemisphere flavour profile being South African. While it has a little kick, it’s exceptionally well balanced – unlike most people on New Years Eve.
The rest of the G4 range is worth a try as well.

1800 Coconut Tequila
We like 1800 Coconut for its subtle difference. I wouldn’t go stocking up on flavoured tequilas or it would be going straight back to student days, but the versatility for something unusual, or a sweet cocktail, makes it a fun addition to the list.
It’s also handy when you run out of your other tequilas, to use it in experimental cocktails.
It’s sweet, and has hints of coconut. Obviously. Pro Tip: Try it in a TV Bar Cocktail
Their essential artists series is exceptional, producing crafted tequila bottles for a limited time. Their website is one to visit.

Don Fulano Anejo
Don Fulano is a truly special treat, not something you’ll casually throw in your shopping trolley every Saturday morning. First, you likely won’t find it in most bottle stores; you’ll likely need to order it online. Second, it’s on the pricier side, so unless you’re related to someone in Big Tech, it might be for special occasions only.
It has a warm and comforting flavour which hangs around a little longer. You want it to through. There are definitely sweeter tones, but also some spice. Like roasted toffee or vanilla chili – interesting.
